Lewin's Compass
A MatheMusical Virtual Museum experience — Android mobile app
This app is a mobile version of Scene 15 of the MatheMusical Virtual Museum, dedicated to David Lewin (1933–2003) and built on the work of Dave Clampitt (Ohio State University) and Thomas Noll (Escola Superior de Música de Catalunya).
Explore two music-theory experiments on a giant Newton's Circle:
- GIS (Generalized Interval System) — touch three points, watch the intervals compose, hear the path.
- Well-formed scales — set a root and a generator, stack to build scales, watch the Christoffel word glow.
Requires: Android phone or tablet, Android 10 or later.

How to install
Android does not install apps from outside the Play Store by default. Three steps:
- Download the APK file using the button above.
- Open the downloaded file. Your phone will ask permission to install from unknown sources — tap Settings, enable it, then return and tap Install.
- Open the app. Lewin's Compass appears on your screen.
If your phone asks “Do you want to install this app?” — tap Install. If it asks about unknown sources — follow the Settings prompt, then return and tap Install again.
About the scene
Lewin's Compass is the newest room in the MatheMusical Virtual Museum, premiered at MCM 2026, Bard College. The full VR museum runs on PC and Meta Quest 3. This mobile app is a standalone gift for Bard collaborators.
