Preface
Music consists of sound patterns, in patterns of time. Patterns invite a mathematical approach, and this book uses elementary mathematics to study both types of patterning. To a surprising degree, the brain organizes musical sound and musical time in comparable ways. As a consequence, the same mathematics that models relations among pitches also effectively models the relations among sonically marked time points.
This situation has the virtue of efficiency: we get “two for the price of one.” Once we learn how to use mathematical terms, symbols, and operations to understand the structures and relations in one domain, we can apply that knowledge to a second domain without having to go back to the mathematical store for a new set of tools …..
